Wesley emerges 1st Runner-Up at the Shakespeare Drama Competition
This year the College DramSoc produced an extract from William Shakespeare’s Othello; The Moor of Venice as the entry to the 44th Annual All Island Interschool Shakespeare Drama Competition organized by the Colombo YMCA and the Rotary Club of Colombo North.
The boys of Wesley performed on the 20th of September 2017 at the Lionel Wendt in the Boy’s Semi Finals and were selected to compete in the Finals along with Maris Stella College Negambo, D.S. Senanayake College Colombo, and Ananda College Colombo. Wesley thus became the only Finalist from the previous year’s competition to compete in this year’s Final.
The Finals of the competition which took place on the evening of the 30th of October 2017 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium saw Wesley emerge 1st Runner-Up (2nd Place) which has been the highest position the College has yet achieved at this prestigious English drama competition which has been credited as one of the longest running Shakespeare drama competition’s in the world. Having emerged 2nd Runner-Up last year, Wesley’s performance at the Shakespeare drama competition this year indicates progress in the field of English drama and theatre activity.
Wesley’s entry was directed by a much accomplished theatre director Mr. Kevin Cruze who also directed Wesley’s entry in 2016. Mr. Cruze who is an old Josephian has done a tremendous service in reviving the spark and enthusiasm in the Wesley DramSoc to bring out the creative spirit for English drama and theatre.
The Teacher-in-Charge of the College DramSoc Mrs.Anusha Senaratne did a commendable job to facilitate the rehearsals and preparations for the students and the director.
The team of this year’s production included –Hashen Ratnayake, Taariq Jurangpathy, Shakib Hisham, Zaahid Aman, Sushendra Peiris, Muaad Razick, Murtaz Barry, Nabeel Barry, Draveen Ahamadeen, Fulail Thaha, Aqeel Mohideen and Nadeem Ashraff.
The Old Boys Batch of 2002 was the central driving force behind this project having made a sizable cash donation to College early on to meet the project’s expenses. The director Mr. Kevin Cruze was also fielded for Wesley’s Shakespeare drama entry last year by the Batch of 2002 which has taken a keen interest in helping the college to progress in English drama and theatre. The donors for this year’s Shakespeare drama project from the Batch of 2002 are as follows:
